If AD would just add an internal Parade, that would give us both displays and scopes, and save us a grand or so in the process. If you have an Nvidia SDI card, the latency is much lower and quite nice to work with, but then you lose the option of dual monitors. If you do either of these, you'll get quite a bit (~12 frames) of latency if you monitor off of your AJA SDI, which can be disconcerting while making adjsutments. In the mean time, the most affordable options I know of for external scopes is either with a Blackmagic Ultrascope/ Smartscope or ScopeBox combined with a 2011 or newer Mac Mini and a Blackmagic Mini Recorder. However, I work mostly in film, so maybe this technique is popular in broadcast. I like that it looks almost toy-like I can see this being of value b/c it doesn't look super serious like some other scopes out there. From a color perspective, not being able to see R-G-B in comparison to one and other is quite a limitation. I got to use a friend's bright red Maxiscope and I must say: after fiddling with it (it's pressure sensitive) I can hear really well out of it. I agree about the lack of a Parade scope.
